Nong Khaem District has a unique name. It's widely believed to have originated from the Thai words nong, which means "wetland" and khaem which means "reed plant". It gained status of Amphoe Nong Khaem officially in year 1902. After the Bangkok's 1972 administrative reform, it became a khet.

The modern day Nong Khaem is perhaps most famous for its large-scale plantings of canna in the centre median strip of Phet Kasem Road. The flowers could be seen along the entire 5 kilometres of roadway. Cannas were planted in 1977 and today, it has emerged as a signature landmark for Nong Khaem.
